Be Smart About Home Security

Home Security

In order to protect your home against intrusions you need to think like a robber, and make adjustments accordingly. There are some definite changes you can make to your home that will help protect it in the long term against potential intruders. From the outside all nice houses look more or less the same, and we can assume that depending on the neighborhood there is a consistency in income. Of course, depending on individual homes’ tastes and interests, money is put into different places. In order to work together as a neighborhood to ensure yours isn’t targeted, consider home security and how it can be improved.

When you put yourself in the shoes of a robber or intruder, you realize there are little things you can change about the appearance of your home in order to make it less of a target. First, you never want to advertise the nice equipment you have in your home.

Any expensive stereos or entertainment equipment should be out of view of windows, or be protected by curtains. It is also a good idea to do some gardening around windows or glass doors, so that the view inside is blocked. This can protect what is inside your home, as well as leave a potential intruder unsure of who is home and where they are. When you are on vacation it is particularly important to give off the feeling that someone could be home. It is a good idea to turn down the volume of your phone ringer, so that it doesn’t sound unattended. A trustful neighbor should also be informed to pick up your mail and newspaper; nothing screams “out of town” like a pile of last week’s newspaper.

Three Questions You Should Ask Your Home Remodeling Contractors

Home Remodeling

If you are seriously thinking about hiring a home remodeling contractor, you should take the time to give each one of these three questions, some thought. These questions could save you a lot of money and frustration.

1. Are you going to be doing the work your self? Most of the time your contractor will sell you the job, but won’t be doing any of the work himself. Get some more info about the crew that he will be sending to your job. You might get along with the contractor, but could have problems with the workers.

2. Make sure that you have emergency telephone numbers, in case one of the workers gets hurt and make sure that you know where the nearest hospital is located. You could find your self in charge of the situation, especially if there’s only one worker on the job.

3. You should have direct access to your contractor, 24 hours a day, just in case something happened in the middle of the night.

All sorts of things could happen, while your contractor or his crew isn’t on the job site. Ask your contractors, if they turn their cell phone off or don’t answer their phone, during certain hours. If this is the case, make sure that they give you an additional phone number, in case there is an emergency.

Each one of these questions might not really sound like they’re that big of a deal, until something happens. I’ve already had problems with each one of these questions and I’m speaking from experience.

Quick Guide to Home Security

Home Security

No one wants to be a victim of crime. No one asks to be robbed. But it happens nonetheless, and the truth is some homes are simply open invitations to thieves. Even though you may think your home is safe, it could be particularly vulnerable. Criminals, especially robbers, are opportunists. They make opportunities where you normally wouldn’t think there are any. As a homeowner, the best way to combat potential break-ins and robberies is to be one step ahead, to vanish all opportunities by being aware and being smart.

Beefing up your home security doesn’t mean you have to plunk down a sizable amount of cash. People can and do spend thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions on state of the art home security systems and fancy home alarms. But those types of systems are usually reserved for CEO’s, heads of state and politicians. The average homeowner really needn’t have a home security system that costs a million dollars.

That’s just over the top.

A good place to start and a relatively cheap option, is to start a neighborhood watch program. Call up your local police or community organization and ask them for pointers. They’ll get you started in the right direction. Neighborhood watch programs take little time-usually, a once a month meeting is scheduled-they are basically free, although you may want to spend a little on refreshments, and they work quite well. These programs foster a sense of community. Everyone has each other’s backs. Suspicious activity is reported to the proper authorities, so no one is in any danger. It’s a simple means of taking back a community and standing up against crime.
